Another big thanks!

On Thursday, Mr. Pregil explained his job as a registered nurse in the emergency department. He reminded us of the importance of good hand washing and the use of the emergency number 911. The students were excited to see how the stethoscope works and receive a band-aid afterwards.

Yesterday afternoon, all of the Kindergarten students listened to Mrs. Baptista's presentation on germs, hand washing and immunizations. Mrs. Lemire, Mrs. Olaybal and Mrs. Lewis' hands were inspected under the black light for germs - even adults need reminders on good hand washing techniques!

Goats

Goats

On Monday afternoon Faith Benko, a Grade 5 CCS student, shared with the school her upcoming mission trip, with her family, to Kenya over spring break. She has challenged each class to raise $50 - which is the price of a goat! A goat is a great source of food supply and its products can be easily sold at markets. So....please send it any donations (coins are welcome) for this challenge.

Fort Langley and Firefighter Presentations

A big thanks to our first two parent presentations! Yesterday, Mrs. Banovich came dressed in 1800's clothing and shared lots of information about the Fort Langley historic site, trading, furs and gold panning. The students were excited to touch furs made out of a beaver, an otter and even a wolf!  She also gave each student a Fort Langley colouring book, storehouse craft, a free child's admission ticket and top hat (parents assembly required).

If you would like to visit Fort Langley, there is a Vive les Voyageurs Winter Festival happening this weekend, Sat. Jan 25 & 26th. Here is a link for more information http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/bc/langley/activ/activ2014.aspx#voyageurs

This morning we had Mr. Devine who shared information about his job as a firefighter. We learned about fire safety, emergency number 911 and clothing that firefighters wear to fight fires. The highlight was that students were able to try on the oxygen mask and show us their stop-drop-and roll! Great job students! I even tried to carry the oxygen tank - boy, that was heavy! Thanks again Firefighter Kevin for bringing us firefighter hats, tattoos and information booklets about fire safety at home!

Letter of the Week: Oo

After Mass on Friday, the entire school sang a lovely song for Mrs. Saharchuk to the tune of You are my Sunshine -we will miss you!

On Friday afternoon, the students enjoyed watching the basketball tournament and cheering on the players in the shooting competition.

In Math, students are working on putting the numbers from 1- 10 in the correct order. I practice with the students with a set of flashcards and ask them to put them in order from smallest to biggest. Also, students should be able to identify the correct quantity for a number. For example, if I say give me 6 erasers they should be able to count out 6 and give them to me. And in reverse, they should be able to count the numbers of items in my hand and say 6!

In Language Arts, students are continuing to learn the letter names and sounds. They are beginning to sound out small three letter words and I have been emphasizing that everyone is learning how to read. Please encourage them to 'Turtle Talk' which means to sound out each letter of the word very slowly at first (for example, h-a-t) and then repeat the sounds until they hear the word.

I will be sending an optional SIGHT word home program this week for those families who are interested in looking forward to goals for Term 3. By the end of Term 2, students should be able to remember all letter names and most of the sounds we have learned.
