June

On Friday, I will be sending home all of the blankets, pillows and stuffies. After lunch, we will now be having 'Quiet Reading' time rather than 'Quiet Time' in preparation for Grade 1. Students are allowed to take 4 books out at a time, find a quiet spot to sit (table or carpet area) and read to themselves.

I have sent home the June calendar on Tuesday - please let me know if you have any questions about any upcoming events.

*Last Scholastic Order deadline is Friday, June 6th
*I am a Gift from God homework is page 11- the right hand only
*This month's theme for Show and Tell is 'Favourite Toy'
*This week was the last time students could take out library books -they are due on Tuesday, June 3rd
*Grade 5/6 buddy lunch & afternoon: students will be having lunch with their buddies on this day, play a few outdoor games and end with homemade cupcakes!

 Tart Cups Tea Dessert

*Parent Appreciation Tea: CCS staff would like to thank all parents for their on-going support throughout the school year. Thank you for all of your time and driving for school events. Please join us at the parish center (gym) for tea and goodies before the Talent Show. Talent Show will begin at 11am and end about 1230pm.

*Step Up Day: Students will be spending an hour in one of the Grade 1 classrooms (Miss Kranabetter or Ms. Paraiso) from 1100 - 1200 pm. This does not indicate who your child's teacher will be in September. Class lists have not been made yet and Mr. Borkowski will announce class lists on the first day of school in September.

*Fun Day: On this day, students will be in their family groups and will travel from station to station throughout the morning. It will end with a big tug of war (students vs teachers!) Dismissal will be at 12 noon.

*Because of the parish feast day (no school) on Friday, June 20th, there will be a school Mass on Thursday.

*To celebrate the end of Kindergarten, we are having a celebration on Tuesday, June 24th. We will be begin the day with outdoor games, relay races involving water (please pack a towel and bathing suit/swim shorts), pizza lunch and a movie (with popcorn!) in the afternoon.

*Last day of school is Wed, June 25th - dismissal will be at 12 noon. Report cards will be given out on this day.

School Uniforms & Super Sight Word Readers

Parents,

There are a few students who are missing pieces of their school/gym uniform so could I ask you all to double check all of your child's clothing to make sure it is labelled? If you find the following, please send it to school with a note attached.

1. Kristian's school vest
2. Riley's gym shorts

Super Sight Word Readers
The students will be checked daily on their sight words so please check your child's folder for the words that they need to work on. Repetition is the key to being able to recognize the sight words within a few seconds!

Debunking Some Myths of Independent Schools

Please read and share Mr. Borkowski's recent blog about independent schools.

Best field trip ever!

Last Thursday, one of our students exclaimed that 'This is the best field trip ever!' as the bus arrived on the grounds of the Surrey's Children's Festival and he saw all of the activity tents. A big thank you to all of the parent supervisors: Mrs. Savidant, Mrs. Gladwell, Mrs. Pregil, Mrs. Walters, Mrs. Tamis and Mrs. Baptista! In the morning, students enjoyed the face painting, clay arts, storytelling tent with the Purple Pirate, mehndi art, sidewalk chalk art and visiting inside a police car. The highlight was the Will Stroet show and it quite delightful to see all of our students out of their seats, singing and dancing to his music. Austin and Riley were even chosen by Will to come up to the stage and dance in front of the audience - great job boys!

Congratulations to Mrs. Saharchuk and her husband who welcomed their son Finnean Gerard Saharchuk on Friday, May 16th!

Families Needed to Host Homestay Students

Elite Homestay is looking for families that are interested in hosting a Japanese student, 16yrs old, for three weeks this summer, from July 20 to Aug 10. They attend English classes and field trips during the week. This group will use the facility at Christ College on 64th Ave near 196st. The stipend is $630 for the three weeks. They are coming here to have the opportunity to hear and practice speaking English. At sixteen they are a lot younger in their demeanor than many of our own teen-agers. Many are shy and very eager to please their host family. They love interacting with children of all ages. Their time with the family gives them the opportunity to enjoy relaxed Canadian life, such as watching movies, walking to the local parks, shopping, eating pizza, learning to cook or bake Canadian favorites. Carpooling can be arranged and accommodations for host work hours can be arranged. Invite a neighbor or friend to host as well and you can do activities on the week nights or weekends together. Please contact Mary O'Reilly at 604-897-2468

Help us win an ice cream party!

Who likes ICE CREAM?  The TWO classes with the highest total purchases in the Knights of Columbus Shopping Card program will win an ICE CREAM SUNDAE PARTY!!!!

The Shopping Card Program is by far the easiest way for us to raise funds for our school expansion project.  Supporting the Shopping Card Program DOES NOT require you to spend extra money.  All you are doing is buying cards for places you go to already.  We are not asking you to donate extra money here.  You're simply changing the WAY you shop.

It takes a bit of time to get used to bringing your cheque book to mass and thinking about where you usually go.  However, once you get into the habit it's easy and you're able to greatly help raise funds. The proceeds of the program go to the parish, the Knights simply administer the program.

Half way through the current contest the standings are as follows.  All classes are close and have a chance at winning so please keep purchasing these shopping cards.  Most importantly please keep supporting the program after the contest closes the weekend of June 7/8.  Every single family that participates greatly helps us raise the funds needed for our school expansion.

1st - Grade 5
2nd - Grade 4L
3rd - Grade 2
4th - Grade 1
5th - Grade 3
6th - Grade KL
7th - Grade 7
8th - Grade 6
9th - Grade KO
10th - Grade 5/6
11th - Grade 4K

May 5 - 9th

Please send your child prepared for the changing spring weather. As the weather becomes nicer, we will be doing our 20 mins of  DPA (daily physical activity) outside. With the heat last week, students should be coming to school with a hat, sunscreen (left in their backpack), sunglasses and an extra drink. I will be encouraging students to drink water continually throughout the day and to remove their school vest/sweater if they feel hot. Alternatively, when the weather changes to rain, please make sure your child comes to school with a hooded jacket and rain boots. They can change into their school shoes when they arrive in the classroom.

Snack & lunch: During snack time, I've noticed that most students usually eat 1-2 (ie fruit, granola bar) of their snacks and then at lunch, they end up only having a sandwich and a drink. Please be aware that your child's appetite is continually growing and I would suggest to everyone to pack 1-2 additional healthy snacks/drinks.

I am a Gift from God program - on the days that your child has homework on their booklet (Wed/Fri), I will be sending out an email to all the parents after school. I will also post it on the blog but sometimes there is a delay and some parents are not receiving the emails in time. Please remind your child to complete only the page that has been indicated in the email - Mrs. Lemire and I appreciate your help with this.

Math - students will be learning about money (names of coins, quantities) as well as an introduction to measurement

Language Arts - students will continue to recognize pre-primer sight words, turtle talking to print words in their drawing/journal, identifying rhyming words
